For
those of you that don't know, last Sunday (1/25/2015), The Screen
Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) 21st annual Screen Actors Guild
Awards (SAG Awards) took place in LA. As usual, there was no host
but just many, many presenters. Most presenters did a fine job
except for a couple of stale ones in the mix. My favorite part, and
possibly the most emotional part, was the in Memoriam tribute that
was done around the middle of the show, although they added in a
couple of bizarre names, for example Don Pardo. Sure he was the
announcer for SNL from it's debut until May of last year, and I'm sad
that he died, but I would not call him an actor. It was in fact a
wise choice that they did Robin Williams Last (if the Academy's In
Memoriam Tribute is not as good as SAG's, I'm going to be really
upset). And there is one other thing I would like to mention
regarding the ceremony (Is this just me? or does Matthew McConaughay
have a beard? Leave a comment down below regarding that).
Now
for the winners – I'm going to give the winners in the 6 movie
categories. Best Actress in a supporting role went to Patricia
Arquette for her work in BoyHood; definitely going to win an Oscar.
Best actor in a supporting role went to J.K. Simmons for his work in
Whiplash; also Oscar material. Best Actress went to Julianne Moore
for her her work in Still Alice; another Oscar candidate. Now here is
the most major upset: Eddie Redmayne winning best Actor for his work
in The Theory of Everything over Michael Keaton in BIRDMAN. Now fans
of Michael Keaton please don't get me wrong, he could still win an
Oscar, but with Eddie Redmayne winning the SAG Award, Michael Keaton
has a lower shot at winning an Ocsar. The most I can say right now is
the category is going to be a very competitive one. Now for the
biggest category of all, Best Picture; BIRDMAN won, which I am not
surprised because if you remember my Award season nomination blog
back in December, I predicted that BIRDMAN would sweep the SAG
Awards, but it did not! With the only award that it won for Best
Picture (if you are going to win one award this is the one to win) it
has a good chance of winning the Oscars. I must say though that it
does have some tough competition with BoyHood and The Grand Budapest
Hotel.
I
would like to clarify a few things; I am not listing the movies that
I think deserve to win, I am predicting the movies that I feel will
win. Just to let you know I am saying that all the winners here are
poised to win an Oscar because, let's remember, at the Oscars the
critics do not vote and the audience does not vote, but is is the
people who are working in the movie industry who are able to vote.
The Academy is about 4,000 members strong, and more than half are
Actors and Actresses. Also a number of Actors in the Academy are
also members of SAG. Award season has become very political these
days because movie studios are actually campaigning to win Oscars;
much like political campaigning. This is why you see all these all
these Oscar nominees on Talk Shows right now (Now let's get out of
the politics of Award season and move on to our final category). The
final category is Best Special Effects Acting Ensemble (I didn't know
there was such a thing); Unbroken received that Award. I would say
that it's poised to win an Oscar, but it was not nominated. now I am
going to say that Dawn of The Planet of The Apes are going to take
that Oscar.
Thanks
for joining me today or tonight depending on your time of reading
this. Remember my end of the year poll is still open. Now as for my
rating on the SAG awards I am going to give it 4 out of 5 stars.
There was nothing particularly wrong with it. Thank you and good
night and be happy.
