The 2015 Annie Awards

The international animated film society (ASIFA-Holywood) held the 42nd annual Annie Awards Ceremony on the eve of Superbowl Sunday, but you may not have realized this as you may have been too busy looking @ Football Scores. Now there are a couple things that I would like to address before I get into this: First off, you may be wondering “What are The Annie Awards?” Well think of it as The Oscars or The Emmys of animation. Now if you are still not really that sure about the Annies, I will put a link to where you will be able to see a Wikipedia article on them and a little short made in 2013 to celebrate the Annies 40th anniversary. Now that that is out of the way, let's move on to my thoughts of the ceremony.

In the past I have called the Annies the most disorganized Award Show because the Ceremonies in recent years have been a bit of a mess. For example, on several occasions, presenters were not prepared as to what to say and some winners waffled on for 10 minutes. Other times, the host did not know which presenters he was supposed to introduce . The worst problem was sometimes giving the wrong envelope for the wrong category for the wrong presenter (3 years in a row). Therefore, I was prepared to be reviewing a mess of a ceremony today, I even got a picture with The Annie with a big red question mark icon, but ironically enough, this turned out not to be the case. Most of the presenters knew what they were supposed to say, except at the beginning, when the teleprompter was not working at all (not their fault but, that incident earned the Annie with the big RED “?”- look for the picture down below). Most surprising of all is that they did not make the envelope fiasco 4 years in a row.

I would like to point out that The Annie Awards are not shown on TV. There are only two ways which they can be watched: on the internet or in person. I personally voted for the internet, partly because they are in Hollywood and I am in New York (not that I would not have loved to see them in person). I think that part of the reason they have not been televised in their 42 year history is for the reasons that I have already mentioned earlier. If the Annies can keep their shows as organized as this one, they may get a chance for a network to televise them (or a cable channel).

As with the SAG and The Oscars, they also have an “In Memoriam tribute” around the middle of the show. If you read my SAG award review you may remember that I said that the In Memoriam tribute was my favorite part of the show, but this was not the case at The Annies due to the fact that it was merely just names scrolling down the screen with a nice background. In my opinion, I think that this is incredibly disrespectful for the people who died. They had a much better In Memoriam tribute last year, but this one seemed more like an afterthought.

Let's move on to the winners: How To Train Your Dragon ll deserving won the majority of the awards. The first “How to Train Your Dragon” unfairly won all the awards in 2011. If you want to know more about the first “How To Train Your Dragon” winning, I will post a link where you can learn about it online (did I mention that How to train Your Dragon ll who also won best animated picture, and also best director and best music and many more?). Yet the other movies were not forgotten: The “Lego Movie” won an award for best writing and “Big Hero 6, ” “The Book of Life,” along with “The Boxtrolls” won awards.

Thanks for joining me today and visit me next time for my review of the biggest night in cinema: “The Oscars.” Good Night and bee happy .
