Welcome to this really belated review of “The Quiet Man”. As some of you might know, “The Quiet Man” was the winner of my end of the year poll. And if you’re wondering how much “The Quiet Man” won in my end of the year poll, it was about 75% of the votes. This one was really belated because of circumstances beyond my control (some of it was kind of my fault). Let’s not waste any more time for my long awaited review of “The Quiet Man”.
Background:
You would think because of the long wait for this review, I would have enough time to do my home work. I, unfortunately, did not, so I guess you can deport me to Ireland. Oh by the way, this movie was shot in Ireland.
Plot:
Everyone’s favorite cowboy John Wayne stars as a former American boxer who moved to Ireland, and where he falls in love with this girl (played by Maureen O’Hara). He get marrys but the bride’s brother will not give the dowry and in the Irish tradition a man and woman are not officially married until the man gets her dowry (I don’t know if that’s a real tradition or not).
Opinion:
Let’s start with the good stuff. The backgrounds look phenomenol. The acting by Maureen O’Hara is great. The cinematography is good. However, what is not good is how they treat women in the movie. For example, if John Wayne’s character was arrested today, he would be forever considered a sex offender for sexual harrassment. For example, he locks Maureen O’Hara in a room for the night. I know a lot of people like this movie, but I couldn’t get past the sexual harrassment which is why i’m giving “The Quiet Man” 2 out of 5 stars. This movie is meh. So goodnight and Merry Christmas!
