The 88th Oscars

For those of you that don't know, the 88th Academy Awards wrapped up yesterday (technically, this morning). As you probably know, it was hosted by Chris Rock for the second time. Now, if you've been reading my blog back in October, I did a piece about Chris Rock hosting the ceremony. And, in that, I said, “Overall, I feel that Chris Rock will do a great job hosting”.
Overall, Chris Rock did a fine job hosting (my prediction was actually right – unlike last year with Neil Patrick Harris). Now, there was a little scandal going around about no African Americans being included in any of the acting categories. Chris Rock being the kind of comedian he is, made fun of it the entire night. Now, some people said that it was too much. However, in my opinion, it was not too much. I think that he gave us what we all needed to hear, but he did it with comedy. If he had done it with out comedy, then I would say that it was too much. He did do something that was not focusing on the Oscars' race controversy. He sold girl scout cookies for his daughters. In my opinion, that bit totally fell flat. It was trying to replicate when Ellen ordered pizza at the ceremony, but paled in comparison. Now, granted maybe if Rock hosted it then and Ellen hosted it this year, we might be saying it the other way around, but I don't know. Now, let's move on to the winners.
Let's start with the biggest surprise of the night. Ex Machina winning visual effects over Mad Max and Star Wars. Even the winners didn't expect to win. The other big “surprise” was Mark Rylance winning best supporting actor over Sylvester Stallone. I can't really call it a surprise considering that I mentioned in my BAFTA blog that there was a possibility that he might win (which, he did).
As predicted, Inside Out won best animated feature. Alicia Vikander won best supporting actress for The Danish Girl. Brie Larson won best actress for Room. Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for best actor in his role in The Revenant. Alejandro González Iñárritu won his second consecutive directing Oscar also for The Revenant. Not since John Ford in the 1940's has a director accomplished this feat. And, of course, best picture went to Spotlight. Spotlight only won one other Oscar for best original screenplay. Not since The Greatest Show on Earth (1953) has a movie done that.

Well, now I end my award season coverage. But, don't worry – it will be back next year (but I still have several other blogs to do before then). Before I end, I would like to mention two movies that you should keep an eye on for next award season: The BFG (directed by Stephen Spielberg and starring Oscar winner Mark Rylance) and The Founder (about the founder of McDonald's starring Michael Keaton). With the Academy's new rules, it's hard to know how this will turn out, so stay tuned to Mr. Bee's Brilliant Movie Buzz.

If you are reading this, on February 29, 2016 today is your last day to get a movie submitted for my end-of-the-year poll. Goodnight, and Bee Happy!

“Cool Dog”

Now, as you guys may know, at the end of my blog from October through December, I had a quiz. And, the award was that if you got the quiz right, you could request a movie for me to review. Well, the wonderful “KM” (for privacy purposes) answered one correctly and she asked me to review this piece of garbage. Let's not waste any more time and begin.
Background:
I don't know much of the “behind the scenes” of this movie because there's barely anything on it...not even a wikipedia page! All I could find is an IMDB page telling me it was released in 2010 with Danny Lerner directing it (I cannot confirm, but I'm sure his surname is “Learner” because he needs to learn how to make a quality movie).

Plot:
Now the plot of the movie can best be described by taking “Homeward Bound/The Incredible Journey,101 Dalmatians, Lassie, Hotel for Dogs, and a couple of scenes from Home Alone” and put them in a blender while taking out all the good parts, and you would get “Cool Dog” . It's the story of a dog trying to find his owner through a cross-country trek by following Twizzlers (maybe there was a little bit of Hansel and Grettle thrown in there for good measure). Enough said...If you think that sounds like a piece of garbage, you would be right!

Opinion:

Now, normally I give you all the good stuff first and then give you the criticisms. In this instance, to my surprise, there was not a single good part. This movie fails on all accounts. The acting is horrendous. The only semi-good thing that I can say is about the acting; is that the actress that plays the landlord does not do a horrible job...but she didn't do a good job either. Jen Kober is her name (Unfortunately, her bushy eyebrows steal her scenes). The directing is bad. Most of the music is especially bad...worst of all is the 90's style rap they made FOR the movie. The writing is awful especially what they try to pass off as “comedy”. There are parts that are SO BAD they are almost funny. Even the cinematography is especially poor, Although some of the areal shots are passable.
Overall, it earns the GOLDEN GARBAGE CAN AWARD...AND IT'S THE ABSOLUTE WORST MOVIE OF THE 21ST CENTURY (SO FAR). Goodnight, bee-happy...and NEVER watch this movie.

The 2016 BAFTA Awards

Well for those of you that don't know ,(most of my readers in Europe likely know) The British Academy Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) held their 69th British Academy Film Awards Ceremony . First off I didn't watch these for two reasons: I'm in the US and they are not majorly televised here like the Oscars or the Golden Globes. Don't get me wrong they are televised here on BBC America which a lot of people are not able to view including me. Also I was away without TV or Internet. Due to this I unfortunately cannot tell you how Stephen Fry did as host but if any of you saw the ceremony please let me know what you thought down below! That doesn't stop me from talking about the winners though so here goes. Best picture went to The Revenant . Best Director went to  Alejandro G. Iñárritu for The Revenant . Best Actor went to Leonardo DiCaprio and is definitely going to be his year at the Oscars. Best Actress went to Brie Larson for Room . Interesting thing about this category is that Alicia Vikander was nominated in this category but at the Oscars she is nominated for supporting Actress and she is the front runner to win it. As for Larson she is the front runner for lead actress. Best supporting Actress was Kate Winslet and she may give Alicia Vikander a run for her money at the Oscars . Best supporting Actor was Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies . I would like to say to Sylvester Stallone, “If you would like to win the Oscar, you are going to need to start campaigning very heavily because you may end up losing it to Mark Rylance.” Best original screenplay went to Spotlight which is probably going to win the Oscar because it won the Writers Guild Award . Best adapted screenplay went The Big Short which is likely going to win the Oscar because it also won at The Writers Guild . And finally Best Animated Feature went to Inside Out which is also the only lock at the Oscars.
Now I would like to mention that this Award season is one of the only ones in history that the best picture race is wide open . Right now there are 3 front runners for Best Picture and they are The Revenant , Spotlight, and The Big Short with the other 5 being a possible upset and those are Bridge of Spies, Mad Max:Fury Road, Brooklyn, The Martian, and Room . What will win , I really can't say Goodnight and Bee Happy!

The 2016 Annie Awards

For those of you that don't know the International Animated Film Society (ASIFA-Hollywood) held their 43rd annual Awards Ceremony last Saturday (at the time I am writing this). Let's get right to it.
Like with last year, there was no host (I also should mention that the ceremony isn't televised – it's webcast) just a bunch of presenters. Not many though. They had one presenter doing 4-5 awards. The ceremony was not totally disorganized as it was last year, as it was in years prior. Of course, one thing that they need to fix is better writers (or better yet, have me host). The “in memorioum” segment was in middle as usual. One thing that was weird about it was the announcer, Dina Sherman, was about to introduce the next presenter and it just skipped to the “in memorium” segment. Maybe it was a technical glitch or they didn't inform the presenter about it. “Because that never happens at the Annies”. This leads me to another issue with the “in memorium” segment itself. They didn't change anything from last year, just a nice background with words going down the screen (I could do a better segment on powerpoint). Let's get on to the winners.
As predicted here Inside Out swept the awards. Winning awards like story boarding, directing and best voice acting for Phyllis Smith. Even though I think Phyllis Smith did a good job, I personally would haven given the award to Any Poehler, also from Inside Out.

Boy and The World won best animated feature-independent. If it can keep the momentum going, it may post a serious threat to inside out at the Oscars.

Remember that you only have 17 days to submit a movie for my end of the year poll.

Goodnight and Bee Happy!

The 2016 SAG Awards

For those of you that don't know, the Screen Actors' Guild & The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) held their 22nd SAG Award Ceremony last weekend. Well, here are my thoughts...Let's get right to it.

Now, if you have been reading my blog for the past year or so, you are familiar with the SAGs, you will know that they have no hosts. Instead, they have a bunch of presenters... which has some problems. Like, it can make the ceremony rather dull. However, it DOES make the ceremony run much faster (maybe next year they could get me to host). There were some presenters that stole the show...well, correction; two. They are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They are really funny. But, as with last year, the best part about the ceremony was the “in Memoriam” segment. And, I will say this, the SAGs do the BEST in Memoriam segment of all the major awards. The Oscars especially try to over-complicate things with their in Memoriam segment by having someone perform. You don't need that! You just need nice music and some clips of what the deceased had done for the industry. Let's move on to the winners.

First off I am not going to be talking about the TV categories. Not that the TV people didn't do a fine job; this is a blog about movies, and I am sticking to that. For best acting ensemble (aka best picture) went to Spotlight which is on its way to winning the Oscar for Best Picture (but it may lose because it's competing against The Revenent). Best Actor went to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenent. I AM SAYING IT; IT'S LEO'S YEAR AT THE OSCARS. Best Supporting Actor went to Idris Edra for Beasts of no Nation but unfortunately, he's not nominated for The Oscar, so the race for the Oscar is wide-open. But, if I had to put money on it, I'd go with Sylvester Stallone. Alicia Vickander won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Danish Girl. And she is on her way to winning the Oscar as well. Best Actress went to Brie Larson for Room. Mad Max: Fury Road won Best Special Effects Ensemble. This movie is on the road to winning the Oscar as well.

Remember, to submit a movie for my end-of-the-year poll. You can find the rules in the event section. Goodnight and Bee Happy!
