The Quiet Man

Welcome to this really belated review of “The Quiet Man”. As some of you might know, “The Quiet Man” was the winner of my end of the year poll. And if you’re wondering how much “The Quiet Man” won in my end of the year poll, it was about 75% of the votes. This one was really belated because of circumstances beyond my control (some of it was kind of my fault). Let’s not waste any more time for my long awaited review of “The Quiet Man”.

Background:
You would think because of the long wait for this review, I would have enough time to do my home work. I, unfortunately, did not, so I guess you can deport me to Ireland. Oh by the way, this movie was shot in Ireland.

Plot:
Everyone’s favorite cowboy John Wayne stars as a former American boxer who moved to Ireland, and where he falls in love with this girl (played by Maureen O’Hara). He get marrys but the bride’s brother will not give the dowry and in the Irish tradition a man and woman are not officially married until the man gets her dowry (I don’t know if that’s a real tradition or not).

Opinion:
Let’s start with the good stuff. The backgrounds look phenomenol. The acting by Maureen O’Hara is great. The cinematography is good. However, what is not good is how they treat women in the movie. For example, if John Wayne’s character was arrested today, he would be forever considered a sex offender for sexual harrassment. For example, he locks Maureen O’Hara in a room for the night. I know a lot of people like this movie, but I couldn’t get past the sexual harrassment which is why i’m giving “The Quiet Man” 2 out of 5 stars. This movie is meh. So goodnight and Merry Christmas!

Award Season Nominations and Wins 2017

Warning ! Some of the awards in the above picture I may not be covering and the dates are not current.
I wrote most of this blog on Friday, December 16th , 2016 and unfortunately I wrote the rest of the blog on Wednesday , December 21, 2016 due to difficulties. When I say Monday or Wednesday in this blog , it refers to the Monday or Wednesday right before Dec 16th. Enjoy!!!
Mr.Bee

Well, hello everybody.  It looks like we we have a clear road to the Oscars!  So let's not waste any time.

The Critics Choice Awards:
The Critics Choice Awards took place last Sunday night.  Here's my very quick analysis.  If you're wondering T.J. Miller hosted the award.  The jokes were hit-and-miss – mostly misses though.  Now, let's get to the winners.  I got 7 out of 9 predictions right (yeah).  Let's summarize:  Best Picture – La La Land.  Best Actor – went to Casey Afleck for Manchester by the Sea (one of the few I got wrong).  Best Actress – Natalie Portman for Jackie.  Best Supporting Actor – went to Mershalla Ali for Moonlight.  Best Supporting Actress went to Viola Davis for Fences.  Best Director – went to Damien Chezelle for La La Land.  Best Animated Feature – went to Zootopia.  Best Original Screenplay – it's a tie between La La Land and Manchester by the Sea (so, I was half-right).  And now Best Adapted Screenplay – went to Arrival.

The Golden Globes Nominations:
The Golden Globe Nominations were announced on Monday.  So. Let's do my predictions:
Best Picture (drama) – Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea
Best Picture (musical or comedy) – There's one very interesting nomination that I want to point out to you; Deadpool.  Either Deadpool is a better movie than most people thought when it came out, or the Hollywood Foreign Press wanted to hang out with People's Sexiest Man Alive (Ryan Reynolds) Unfortunately for Deadpool, it does not have a chance of winning.  It will be La La Land
Best Actor (drama) – Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea
Best Actor (musical or comedy) – The award may go Ryan Reynolds just because they want to see his acceptance speech, but most likely Ryan Gosling for La La Land
Best Actress (drama) – Natalie Portman for Jackie-
Best Actress (musical or comedy) – Emma Stone for La La Land
Best Supporting Actor – Mershalla Ali for Moonlight
Best Supporting Actress – Viola Davis for Fences
Best Director – Damien Chezelle for La La Land
Best Screenplay: La La Land
Best Animated Feature – Zootopia

SAG Awards Nominations:
(one thing about the SAGs this year is that La La Land seriously under-performed.  It did not get nominated for their Best Picture category which is known as Best Performance by a Cast of a Motion Picture). As to what movie is going to win , It’s a race between Moonlight and Manchester by the sea .
Best Actress - Natalie Portman for Jackie
Best Actor- Casey Affleck for Manchester by the sea
Best Supporting Actor- Mershalla Ali for Moonlight
Best Supporting Actress -Viola Davis for Fences

That about wraps up this blog so Goodnight, and Bee Happy!

Jimmy Kimmel to become the 77th Oscar Host

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel announced that he was hosting the Oscars.  As I said in my top 10 Oscar host post, Kimmel was one of the people on the Academy’s short-list (or, more specifically, on ABC’s short-list).  Now, he hosted the Emmys this year and did a pretty decent job, and I like his show.  However, my late-night loyalties tend to be with Colbert, Meyers, and Noah.  In my top 10 potential host list, I gave you my picks on my top ten list and why the Academy should and should not hire each.  So, here is the  pros & cons about Kimmel hosting.
Pro: Jimmy Kimmel Live is on ABC.  And, the Oscars ceremony is on ABC which allows for a lot of cross-promotion.
Con: Jimmy Kimmel’s show is in third place in the time slot.  Now, you might not think that’s a bad thing, but keep in mind that there are only 3 major networks that air late-night shows (NBC, CBS, ABC).
Pro: He is an experienced awards show host.  He’s hosted the Emmys twice and the American Music Awards a couple of times.
Con: The Emmys this year were one of the worst rated Emmy shows in recent memory.
So, whether you like him or hate him, Kimmel will be hosting the 89th Academy Awards.  In
conclusion, I think he will do a decent job.  Goodnight, and Bee Happy!

Best Screenplay: Damien Chazelle (La La Land)

Annie Awards Nominations 2017

Yesterday the LA branch of the International Animated Film Society (ASIFA – Hollywood) announced their nominations for the 44th Annie Awards. So, here I am...ready to cover them once again. Let's not waste anymore time.
Let's start with best animated feature. No big surprises in this category. The one tiny surprise is that KungFu Panda 3 got in there. This nomination is probably just filling up the list. As to which film will win, there are three major contenders for this category. They are: Zootopia, Kubo, and Moana. Finding Dory has an outside shot of winning (it is, after all, Pixar – so you cannot count them out). If I had to pick one, it would be Zootopia.
Best Animated Feature – Independent – I honestly am not familiar with any of these movies, so my best prediction would have to be The Red Turtle (it's Studio Ghibli, so it's a safe bet).
Now, as for best music, this is the one of the few major upsets. Moana is NOT nominated in this category. I thought it would be a shoe-in for this category because it is an animated musical and musicals usually do very well in this category (such as Frozen). But, the movie that took its place was Batman: Return of the Caped Crusader. I honestly didn't even know it was eligible since it was a direct-to-dvd movie. As for what's going to win, it's up in the air since Moana was left out, but I think that Hans Zimmer has a good chance of winning for his work in The Little Prince.
As for directing, I predict the directing duo of Byron Howard and Rich Moore for Zootopia. My runner-up would be Travis Knight for Kubo. For best voice acting, this is another big surprise. Ellen DeGeneres was not nominated for Finding Dory. I think it will be Jason Bateman for Zootopia. And, now for the final category, writing. I predict Zootopia (no contest).

And, just to let you know, I've only seen three of the movies I was talking about today. Here are the movies and my opinion of them. Zootopia – Brilliant. Finding Dory – a great movie. The Little Prince – Decent. I hope to see more by the end of the season. Goodnight, and Bee Happy!

The Governors Awards 2016

Now two years ago, I did a blog entitled “The Death of the Oscars”. And, in that, I was very unhappy with the Governors Awards because instead of live-streaming it, they blogged it. And then last year, they didn't do either. So what you might be wondering this year is what they did with it. The answer is, I don't know. I was out when the ceremony was going on, so I really don't know what they did with it this year. So, the only thing I can say is, congratulations to JACKIE CHAN, ANNE V. COATES, LYNN STALMASTER AND FREDERICK WISEMAN. And, I forgot to mention this in the beginning, but welcome to my awards season coverage. And, by the way, here are two movies that you may want to keep an eye out for this season; Birth of a Nation and La La Land. So, Goodnight, and Bee Happy!

Frost/Nixon

Hello, we are one week before the election (or the apocalypse).  Last, we reviewed “W” about George W. Bush.    Now we will review Frost/Nixon which is about the interviews between Frost and Nixon in the '70s.  So, let's not waste anymore time.

Background:
I have failed to do my research on this and my other homework assignments.  So, I guess you can impeach me.

Plot:
This movie centers around David Frost who was a british talk show host. It also focuses on Richard M Nixon former president of the United States. Now that we have the characters out of the way, let’s get to the actual plot. David Frost wants to get fame in America so he decides to see if he can interview former President Nixon.

Opinion:
The acting in this movie is phenomenal,Michael Sheen does an awesome job as David Frost. Frank Langella is Nixon as you do not see Frank Langella , you see Richard Nixon. There is one bizzarre thing that the did, it is shot in a documentary style which is not bad but they also had a bunch of the actors be talking heads as they are being interviewed for a documentary. This is where it would be better, if it were told in flash backs and the present day be them making a documentary about these events ( but nope they did not do that). The writing was really good and the music was good as well .
On one hand this is 10 times better than W , but given that wierd choice to have talking heads , I unfortunately had to take off several points. That is why I’m giving Frost / Nixon 3 out of 5 stars.

I won’t be posting another blog until after the election so I have some advice to all the voters and that is every one of you , think long and hard about who you are planning on voting for . Really consider if they are the right person for that office. Good Night and Pray for our Country -Bee Happy Everyone!

The Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration

Here we are. We are at the 10th movie of The Land Before Time series. By this point, the Universal executives have totally lost their minds. There’s really not much else to say, so let’s find out if they actually put effort into this one (spoiler alert: no).

Background
This movie is directed by Charles Grosvenor and he has directed several other Land Before Times that we have already reviewed (and the next 3 movies that we are reviewing). And that’s about it. Nobody went to the effort to put up behind the scenes facts about this movie. Of course can you blame them? I would go back in time and stop this movie from being made (correction, I will go back in time and stop every single sequel of this series from being made).

Plot
All the longnecks are having this bizarre dream (and of course longnecks’ minds have to be connected in some way in order for this to make any bit of sense, which it does not). So anyway, Littlefoot and his grandparents have to go away from the Great Valley because apparently this dream is telling them something (even though this dream made absolutely no bit of sense, but who knows maybe it did in the writers’ minds..oh wait, I forgot they have no minds anymore). Anyways, Ducky, Petrie, Sarah, and Spike have to go and find him and, they meet up with several new characters (we may or may not see them again in future movies).

Opinion
As I was writing this and I was looking at the writers of this movie, it turns out that one of the writers was Judy Freudberg and that name probably means nothing to all of you, and it didn’t for me either. But as i was looking at her Imdb page, I found out something very interesting. She wrote a movie you may have heard of and it’s the first Land Before Time (I repeat the first Land Before Time) and several other Land Before Time movies as well. Now how can you go from writing a really good movie such as The Land Before Time, and then go on to several really crummy sequels to that movie? When I wrote the plot of this movie, I jokingly said “Oh wait, I forgot, the writers have no minds anymore!”, and, well, I must be right because going from a really good movie to several really bad sequels does not make any sense (Her mind must have been clouded by dollar bills). Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get into my opinion.  The character animation was passable.  What is not passable was the CGI backgrounds even by 2003 standards.  I already mentioned that the story is not good.  In this movie, they introduce (Spoiler alert) Littlefoot’s dad.  He is a poorly written character, almost to the point he is unlikeable.  His backstory made no bit of sense and doesn’t fit the continuity of the series.  Apparently, when Littlefoot’s mom was pregnant, he went off to find a suitable place to live.  When he got back, there was apparently an earthquake that totally changed the geography  and he couldn’t find his family.  Here’s are some problems; #1 he left his pregnant wife for god knows how long to find a place to live - not a smart move.  #2 The earthquake wouldn’t have changed things too much.  #3 When Littlefoot was born (and all the others), they were looking for the Great Valley in the first movie which was a legend that had probably been going around for years.  When he came back and the geography had changed, he should have assumed that his wife would do that.  In short, they made this character very unlikable.  This is the first time in nine movies that they mentioned that Littlefoot had a mom.  Another problem is in the story when they literally held up the sun.  #1 the sun is really, really hot (via a google search - 10,000 degrees at the surface which they’d have all been touching).  So, pretty much, if they held up the sun, they’d have been burned to a crisp.  On the scientifically-accurate meter, this movie ranks a 1.  With the voice acting, the biggest problem was that they weren’t even trying.  We have really talented actors in the cast, but they sounded like they just wanted a paycheck (James Garner and Keifer Sutherland for example).  And the songs are awful!     There is one song that is not awful but sang twice (the first time by the cast, the second time by Olivia Newton John).  The one by the characters just makes touch the sun with my ears.  The second time is just your very typical song about friends.  On a side-note, there’s a bonus feature on the DVD where Olivia Newton John talks about her recording the song.  Nowhere will you hear her mention the words “the land before time”.  Overall, this movie is BAD, but I have seen a lot worse.  So, overall, this movie barely escapes the golden garbage can. Which is why it gets one lonely star.  Goodnight, and Bee Happy!

W.

Hello and welcome. For everyone outside of the US it might be useful for you guys to know that we here in the states are having a pretty big election coming up. We will elect our 45th and possibly last President. So in honor of this election, I will be taking you back to 2008 when two movies about the two worst republican Presidents ever were released (and we might elect another really bad President). I will be reviewing both of those movies. So in order of their release date, let’s review W. By the way, in case you didn’t know this movie is about George W. Bush.
Background
This movie was directed by Oliver Stone. He also directed two other movies about American Presidents and they are JFK and Nixon (respectively) and if you’re wondering, I may review those eventually.

I only have one fun fact for this movie and it is that W is the first movie made about a sitting US President (there’s a problem with that I will mention later on).
Plot
This movie is primarily told in flashbacks.  The “present-day” are the meetings discussing going into Iraq (which we are still in).

Opinion
Disclaimer: I am not a big fan of Bush.  Now the acting is not bad.  The writing was not the best political drama writing I have ever seen (that honor belongs to Speilberg’s Lincoln).  But, overall, it was not horrible.  I find the best parts being the scenes between W. and H.W. (played respectively by Josh Brolin and James Cromwell).  I would have prefered the movie to focus more on their relationship.
The problem with making the movie during his tenure as president, we didn’t know all of the details because the White House was keeping most of the stuff under wraps.  Overall, I don’t find W. a bad movie.  It is a sub-par movie.  Overall, I have to give it ⅗ stars.  It is an enjoyable movie.

The Top X Oscar Hosts for 2017

Hello, and welcome back. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. You might have noticed that my posts have been rather infrequent and that's because my volunteer staff took the summer off. But anyways, to make it up to all of you, the fall will be a very busy time for us. Some of the things that I have planned are the reviews of The Land Before Time installments 10 and 11and my long-awaited review of The Quiet Man, a tribute to Gene Wilder, and the start of my award season coverage. And, speaking of award season, The Academy is very close to announcing who their pick for Hollywood's biggest night will be.
Now, every year I make my own private case for who I want to host the Oscars. And, I thought I would share this list with all of you.

Now, first off, The Hollywood Reporter unearthed several names of candidates from the decision-makers' desks. I will tell you those names very quickly because they are not on my list: Eddie Murphy (has not been funny for decades), Louis C.K. (could work), Jimmy Kimmel (who did a really good job hosting the Emmys), Key and Peele (a good comedy duo), The Rock and Kevin Hart (The Rock is good, Kevin Hart, not so much).
My list are names that the Academy should be considering. I'm going to be giving you the pros and cons of people on my list as to why the Academy should or shouldn't consider them. After all, the reason that the Oscars are on TV is because of ratings. In simple math terms, ratings = $$$. Enough introductions
X Patton Oswald.
He is one of my personal favorite comedians.
Pro - He hosted the Annie Awards in the first year when they had the envelope fiasco. He was able to make jokes about it and it proved that he had a quick wit.
Con – He is a very obscure comedian
IX John Oliver
Last Week Tonight is one of my favorite late-night shows and the best satire on tv.
Pro – He has a legion of fans which will transfer for the telecast.
Con – He may offend the older crowd and some Hollywood celebrities. And, his show airs on Sunday nights...the same night as the Oscars.
VIII Stephen Colbert
Along with Oliver, he is a The Daily Show alum and one of my favorite late-show hosts.
Pro – The Late Show is one of the highest rated talk shows.
Con – He is on a competing network.
VII Kevin Spacey
He is a great actor and very funny.
Pro – He has a great deal of credibility.
Con – He might not appeal to the younger crowd.
VI Jon Stewart
Back when he hosted The Daily Show, I watched it religiously.
Pro – He has a legion of fans (me included)
Con – He's hosted the show twice and both shows ended up being the lowest rated Oscar shows
V Billy Crystal
He's a classic comedian
Pro – He's hosted the show nine times and the first couple shows he did (with the exception of the 1997 show) are some of the highest rated shows and overall did really well in the ratings.
Con- The last time he hosted in 2012, he drew more older people. And, in 1997, he did really bad in the ratings.
IV Seth Myers
He is one of my favorite late-night guys and one of the best Emmy hosts in recent memory (sorry, Kimmel).
Pro – His show is the highest-rated show in the time slot.
Con – He is on a competing network.
III Steve Martin
One of the greatest comedians ever (to understate it).
Pro – Who doesn't like Steve Martin? He has been in some of the greatest comedies ever made and has also received an honorary Oscar.
Con – He is a three-time host, and he hasn't brought stellar ratings with him when he hosts. Of course, they didn't do horrible.
II Whoopie Goldberg
Also one of the greatest comedians ever. And, in my opinion, the greatest female comedian living.
Pro – She hosts the view, which airs on ABC and the Oscars are on ABC, so there is an opportunity for cross-promotion
Con – She has hosted the Oscars four times and they did not do so well in the ratings.
And, now, before I get to number 1, it's time for some honorable mentions. Me! Ellen DiGeneres, Samantha Bee, and Hugh Jackman (just not as Blackbeard).

And the number 1 spot goes to....

I Seth McFarlane
In my opinion, far and away, the best Oscar host in recent memory...maybe even ever. Of course I have not seen every Oscar ceremony (I wish I had because that would be a pretty nice claim to fame).
Pro – The show he hosted did really well in the ratings.
Con – He offended a lot of the Hollywood Elite...mainly because they don't have a very good sense of humor. Also, his last two movies (A Million Ways to Die in the West and Ted 2) did not do well at the box office.
Well, thanks for joining me. Rest assured that I'll be posting more on this when we find out who the host will be, but that's it for now. It's great to be back! So, goodnight, and Bee Happy!

“Pete’s Dragon”

Welcome to all the Olympic Athlete’s that may be reading my blog (and to everyone else). Well it has been TWO YEARS since I started up this blog ( well two years on this coming Sunday) . Since that time I have totally laced into the Academy and Kid’s Choice and I have done two end of the year polls (and the movie that won last year ,I still haven’t reviewed; “give me a break I’ve been busy” ). We have reviewed 9 of the Land Before Time movies and we still have 5 left to go! (Do I have to review 5 more of these “crappy” movies? ) Back on to the main subject , I thought the best way to celebrate ( and it’s not remembering all the good times on my blog) is to review another Don Bluth movie. The first review I did was The Land Before Time which is a movie he made by himself ( well technically by himself because he did have a bunch of people working for him ) . One year ago for my one year anniversary I reviewed Sleeping Beauty and that is the first movie he ever worked on ( at least professionally ). Today we will be reviewing Pete’s Dragon ( 1977) . If you're wondering what Bluth did , he was the lead animator on Elliot the dragon. Shall we begin ?
Background:
This film is based on an unpublished short story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field . Later on Disney bought the rights and Don Chaffey was hired to direct the film. It became a half live action and half animated film ( if you're wondering how they blended Elliot the Dragon with the real people ,I think it required a special kind of film and a special kind of lighting: very complicated! ). Here is a little fun fact for you , The lighthouse that Disney built in California for this movie was equipped with a ginormously big light that Disney had to get special permission from the Coast Guard to operate due to possible  confusion for the ships ( hows that for irony ? )

Plot:
The basic premise is a boy that is a person who is trying to run away from his adoptive parents because they used him as free slave labor. A boy named Pete has a friend that happens to be a dragon that is named Elliot . He finds a small town where the people tend to be afraid of dragons and then there is a witch doctor that comes to town and he wants Elliot.
Opinion:
I would like to mention that I am reviewing the 129 minute cut. There are several versions of the movie : the two most readily available are the 129 minute cut and the 128 minute cut. If you're wondering which one I prefer , I will give you that one later. Now this movie can get very boring.  The main villain which is the witch doctor , just didn’t do it for me. Granted he did have his moments but I think that the focus should have been on Pete’s abusive foster parents.  Most of the songs are not in the least bit memorable.  There are only two songs that are catchy, those being “I thought I saw a Dragon” and “Candle on the Water”(sung by the lighthouse keeper's daughter.) Even though the songs are not memorable they have several very funny scenes  connected to them. The animation on Elliot is very good (one of Don Bluth’s best works.) As to which cut I prefer it is the 128 minute cut, because it is less boring. If you are wondering about my feelings about the remake that is coming out I have my doubts due to Disney’s past record on remakes of the classics (granted I have not seen the remake of the Jungle Book.) Pete’s Dragon is a 3 Star movie!

Thank-you to everyone that has read my blog for the past 2 years, I will be forever grateful. I have a whole lot more things planned so keep coming back.

Goodnight, and Bee Happy!™
