The 87th Oscars

Now for those of you that don't know, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences ( AMPAS ) held their 87^th Academy Awards last Sunday ( 2/22/15 ). As you probably could tell, I had really been looking forward to this and leading up to this night for the last 6 months. What I am going to be doing is telling you my opinion on the ceremony and then I'm going to tell you who won the most coveted award “tinseltown”. Before we get into all of this, I would like to congratulate all the razzie award losers, and to all the razzie award winners, better luck with the next movie.

The Oscar ceremony was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, as you may remember, I did a blog about Neil hosting when it was announced back in October. In that I said “I think Neil Patrick Harris will do a wonderful job”. Did he do a good job ? The answer: kind of. The ceremony was “meh” (yes this is an official word). The opening production number was the best part of the ceremony and everybody thought we were going to be in for a really fun night! Neil Patrick Harris did a good job as a host although his jokes were not really that funny and that little thing about his predictions did not really pay off at the end of the ceremony. I know they would never ask me to write the script, but this is what I would have done, instead of having them all be correct, I would have had the predictions all be wrong! It would have been funnier. The first hour was pretty good and kind of entertaining, but it unfortunately it went downhill from there. The performances were very good including Lady Gaga's performance (she actually looked normal). The performance of the song “Everything is Awesome” (from The Lego Movie) was awesome (I'm sure I wasn't the only person that danced to it).

As you may have remembered, I did a review of the SAG Awards, and I stated in it that the In Memoriam was my favorite part of the ceremony and I also stated that “if the Academy's In Memoriam is not as good as this one that I was going to be very upset ”. It was good except they left out one very important name and that was Joan Rivers. Yes she was more of a TV personality, but she has played in a couple of movies and she hosted the Oscars Red Carpet for many years. I think that those reasons are reasons enough to put her in your tribute and, one more thing, I think they should have had the person singing while the montage was going on instead of ending the montage and then going to the person singing. (I think that is part of the reason why the ceremony ended 40 minutes late).

Now for the winners. “BirdMan” won Best Picture and best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu. “Boyhood” won for best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette. Best Actress went to Julianne Moore for “Still Alice”. Best suppoting Actor went to J. K. Simmons for “Whiplash”. Best actor went to Eddie Redmane for The “Theory of Everything”. Best animated feature went to “Big Hero 6” (I thought for sure “How to Train Your Dragon II” was going to win but I can't complain). Nobody went out of there empty handed. “Selma”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, and “American Sniper” all recieved something.
