Well, welcome. Last Sunday night The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences held the 89th Academy Awards. And, as I’m sure you’ve heard, they had a little bit of a mix-up with the Best Picture category (I repeat, THE BEST PICTURE). For the two of you that have not heard, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the Best Picure category. They announced La La Land as the winner...My prediction was right for two minutes! Only to come to an uncomfortablly abrupt end. Then, apparenlty, they revealed to the crew of La La Land (on stage), in fact, they didn’t win...and that Moonlight did. So, La La Land had to conceide to Moonlight. It is literally like the end of the election when the losing candidate has to concede to the winning one...except for they are occupying the same stage. Warren Beatty did come up to the stage to try to explain himself. Faye Dunaway was probably nearly to Mexico by then. He explained that The Best Actress envelope has somehow got swapped for The Best Picture envelope. And, since Emma Stone won The Best Actress award for La La Land (which, not to boast, I also predicted), the presenters just went with the movie she was in (listed under her name). If all this sounds like a total mess, you’d be right! Someone is going to lose their job over this one (unless you’re the Annies and hire the same person back year after year). This has never happened in the Academy’s 89 year tradition of this event. So now let’s get to my theory as to WHY Moonlight beat out La La Land. The reason that this blog has been delayed for a few days, is because I was getting my jaw put back into place from the utter shock at how this all unfolded. I’ve come up with a couple of theories. The first theory that I have is for best picture, they have a preferential ballot system (only for best picture). So La La Land was probably very low on a lot of ballots. Although this movie had several fans, it also had several haters. Another theory is that with the “Oscars so white” controversy last year, the voters wanted to error on the side of caution because they had a true contender in Moonlight.
Now my thoughts on the rest of the ceremony: Jimmy Kimmel is probably the best Oscar host since Seth MacFarlane. The ceremony itself was the best since 2013 as well. And the rest of the major winners are as follows (and, not to boast, I got most of them right).
- Best Actress - Emma Stone: La La Land
- Best Actor - Casey Affleck: Manchester by the Sea
- Best Director - Damien Chazelle - La La Land
- Best Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
- Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis - Fences
- Best Animated Feature - Zootopia
- Best Adapted Screenplay - Moonlight
- Best Original Screenplay - Manchester by the Sea
Thanks for everyone joining me for the entire awards season, and I honestly hope that I will get a better record for my predicting my picks next year...considering that that last year I said that The Founder and BFG were going to be Best Picture Nominees but both got 0 total nominations...and, back in November, I said La La Land and Birth of a Nation would get a lot of nominations - I was half-right....I also predicted La La Land for best picture (but everyone said that)...beside, I was right for about a minute.
Here are EARLY predictions for next year’s top Oscar nominations: Dunkirk (Directed by Christopher Nolan) about D-Day and Darkest Hour (starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill) about Churchill during WWII. Also, two movies with an outside chance: Beauty and the Beast and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Well, I hope I’m right on at least one of the four I predicted. To the Oscar producers, I’m hiring. Goodnight, and Bee Happy!™
