The
nominees are in! Early Tuesday morning, the Academy announced their
nominations for the Oscars. Before I get into the categories, there
are a few tid-bits that I want to point out. Deadpool (which was
nominated for the Golden Globes, the Producers Guild, and the
Directors Guild) got ZERO nominations. Kubo and the Two Strings got
a nomination for Best Visual Effects (which, as far as I know, is the
first animated movie that has done that). A rarity for me with Best
Documentary; I have actually seen one of the nominations and am able
to see another one. I saw Life Animated which is a really good
documentary that I highly recommend. The other one one that I will
see by the end of the season is 13th. So, let's
officially begin.
Best
Picture:
There
are nine nominations. As some of you may know, there can be up to
10. Some of the movies that got left out are Jackie (which got a
Best Actress Nomination for Natalie Portman). The Jungle Book
(which got a nomination for Visual Effects). Zootopia which got a
nomination for Animated Feature (I'm really dissapointed that it
didn't get a nomination for Best Picture). La La Land tied Titanic
for a record 14 nominations and will most-certainly win this category
(of course, that's what they said about Hillary Clinton).
Best
Director:
No
contest, Damien Chazelle will win for La La Land. I am a little
surprised that Mel Gibson got a nomination even though it's highly
unlikely that he will win considering that he offended a whole bunch
of people.
Best
Actress:
As
of right now, it's a three-way race. Issabelle Huppert for Elle,
Natalie Portman for Jackie, and Emma Stone for La La Land. But
Meryl Streep could have a surprise win for Florence Foster Jenkins.
Best
Actor:
Casey
Affleck will probably win for Manchester by the Sea. Ryan Gosling
for La La Land is another favorite.
Best
Supporting Actor;
I
am kind of surprised Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who won the Golden
Globe for best supporting
actor, was not even nominated. Regardless, it will be Mahershala
Ali for Moonlight.
Best
Supporting Actress:
Viola
Davis will easily win for Fences.
Best
Original Screenplay:
La
La Land in a La-La-Landslide.
Best
Adapted Screenplay:
Arrival
will arrive for the win.
Best
Animated Feature:
This
is a very interesting category, so let me break it down for you.
This category features 2 CGI films, 2 stop-motion films, one
hand-drawn, 3 mainstream movies, 2 independent, 2 Disney movies,
and zero Pixar films. So, in short, the Academy really, really liked
the original Disney but not its sister company. And, if you're
wondering what's going to win, it's going to be Zootopia.
Thanks
for joining me for this kinda' lengthy blog. Remember, you still
have until Feb. 28 to get a movie submitted for my end-of-the year
poll. And, if you like this, there will be plenty more of my award
season coverage for the rest of this month and February. Goodnight, and Bee Happy!™
