Well,
the Oscar nominations were announced yesterday morning (at the time I
am writing this.)
There
were a lot of surprises, so let's not waste any more time and get
right to it.
Let's
start with Best Animated Feature. Now, when I was predicting it, I
thought that the nominees would be Inside
Out,
Shawn
the Sheep,
Peanuts,
The
Good
Dinosaur,
and Anamolisa.
But, I only ended up being right on three of them. Inside
Out,
Shawn
the Sheep
and Anamolisa.
The other nominations, I did not think were going to make it. Boy
& the World
and When
Marnie Was There
I did not think were going to make it. I guess I couldn't be too
surprised on
Marnie
because it is Studio Gibli and the Academy loves them. They even
gave the award to them for Spirited
Away
in 2003. As for who is going to win, it's easily going to be Inside
Out.
Best
Director: I am surprised that Ridley Scott was not nominated for
The Martian.
When it won Best Picture Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes last
Sunday, I thought it was a shoe-in to win Best Picture. Now it looks
like it's not, because usually when the director is not nominated,
the film usually does not win Best Picture. It could happen, and it
has happened...but only 4 times in history. The most recent to do so
were Driving
Miss Daisy
(1990) and Argo
(2013)
respectively. So I predict that we will have to wait at least
another 23 years before we see it happen again. So, in short, The
Martian
is probably not going to win Best Picture. As for who is going to
win Best Director, I predict Alejandro
G. Iñárritu
but Tom McCarthey being a possible upset, because the academy might
have a problem with giving it to the same person two years in a row.
Best
Picture: There are 8 nominations this year. As you may know, the
nominations for Best Picture can range anywhere from 5-10 movies.
There are a couple of movies that got left out due to there being
only 8. The movies that could have made the list but did not are
include but is not limited to: Star Wars, even though
it got several technical award nominations and best score for John
Williams, Carol, even though it managed to get two
acting nominations for Cate Blanchett and Ronney Mara, Straight
Outta Compton even though it did get a best
original screen play nomination, and Inside Out (I am
disappointed on this one) but as mentioned earlier it did get a best
Animated Feature nomination and a best Original Screen Play
nomination. As for who is going to win best picture I predict The
Revenant. As for best actor it's Leo's year finally! With
Matt Damon being a possible upset.
