Welcome
to this very special bonus review of a movie that I was able to see
in the theaters over Mothers' Day Weekend (2015). And that movie
that I was able to see was The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
Now, before I get into this, I would like to tell you about my
relationship with Spongebob (no, we are not romantically involved).
But, like a lot of people, I grew up with the show. Spongebob first
debuted when I was 6 months old (in 1999). For those that suck at
math (like me), I am 16. But, anyways, I grew up watching Spongebob
quite regularly growing up. However, around 2008 or so, I sort of
lost interest. Part of it might have to do with the show's creator
Stephen Hillenburg leaving the show around that time. But, granted,
that was also around the time that I started losing interest in my
other childhood shows on Nickelodeon such as Fairly Odd Parents and
Jimmy Neutron, but that's a story for another day. Okay, let's
begin.
BACKGROUND
Well,
unfortunately, I didn't have much time to research this, so this
background I'm going to keep blank. But, my friend, Jen did do a
very good blog about the show's history
http://jenspalik.blogspot.com/2015/01/why-i-love-spongebob.html
PLOT
Now
the plot of this movie is roughly about the “crabby paddy's”
secret formula being stolen by a pirate called “Burger Beard”.
OPINION
Well,
for the first time in about 7 years, if felt like “spongebob”.
This is a feeling that I haven't felt since 2008! But, they found a
way to do that. Part of the reason may be because Stephen Hillenburg
is back to write the script for the new movie. But the movie was
fresh, funny, and it kept the spongebob brand of humor that was
missing in the newer episodes. But, some people might be
disappointed that there wasn't enough live-action scenes as the
trailers implied. Most of the movie was set in the Bikini Bottom,
and the animation is the same-old animation that we see in the show.
They don't even go onto the surface until the last half-hour. So,
most of the animation in the movie is hand drawn much like we see in
the show, and not CGI. But, when they finally do go to the surface,
that's when the CGI kicks in. Now, is that a bad thing? Well, no,
if you're a big Spongebob fan. If your not, then you shouldn't be
watching this movie in the first place. I was going to give the
movie 4-stars, but as a Spongebob fan, I am proud to bestow this
movie the highest honor that I can give - the covetted 5 STAR rating.
