The 87th Oscars

Now for those of you that don't know, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences ( AMPAS ) held their 87th Academy Awards last Sunday ( 2/22/15 ). As you probably could tell, I had really been looking forward to this and leading up to this night for the last 6 months. What I am going to be doing is telling you my opinion on the ceremony and then I'm going to tell you who won the most coveted award “tinseltown”. Before we get into all of this, I would like to congratulate all the razzie award losers, and to all the razzie award winners, better luck with the next movie.

The Oscar ceremony was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, as you may remember, I did a blog about Neil hosting when it was announced back in October. In that I said “I think Neil Patrick Harris will do a wonderful job”. Did he do a good job ? The answer: kind of. The ceremony was “meh” (yes this is an official word). The opening production number was the best part of the ceremony and everybody thought we were going to be in for a really fun night! Neil Patrick Harris did a good job as a host although his jokes were not really that funny and that little thing about his predictions did not really pay off at the end of the ceremony. I know they would never ask me to write the script, but this is what I would have done, instead of having them all be correct, I would have had the predictions all be wrong! It would have been funnier. The first hour was pretty good and kind of entertaining, but it unfortunately it went downhill from there. The performances were very good including Lady Gaga's performance (she actually looked normal). The performance of the song “Everything is Awesome” (from The Lego Movie) was awesome (I'm sure I wasn't the only person that danced to it).

As you may have remembered, I did a review of the SAG Awards, and I stated in it that the In Memoriam was my favorite part of the ceremony and I also stated that “if the Academy's In Memoriam is not as good as this one that I was going to be very upset ”. It was good except they left out one very important name and that was Joan Rivers. Yes she was more of a TV personality, but she has played in a couple of movies and she hosted the Oscars Red Carpet for many years. I think that those reasons are reasons enough to put her in your tribute and, one more thing, I think they should have had the person singing while the montage was going on instead of ending the montage and then going to the person singing. (I think that is part of the reason why the ceremony ended 40 minutes late).

Now for the winners. “BirdMan” won Best Picture and best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu. “Boyhood” won for best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette. Best Actress went to Julianne Moore for “Still Alice”. Best suppoting Actor went to J. K. Simmons for “Whiplash”. Best actor went to Eddie Redmane for The “Theory of Everything”. Best animated feature went to “Big Hero 6” (I thought for sure “How to Train Your Dragon II” was going to win but I can't complain). Nobody went out of there empty handed. “Selma”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, and “American Sniper” all recieved something. Well that concludes my awards season coverage, but come back and join me in March for my review of the winning movie for my end of the year poll (which you have one more week to vote on: it ends this Saturday 2/28/15) and the long awaited review of “The Land Before Time lll”.

Breaking News Disney and Sony Working Together !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those of you that don't know , late last night the internet exploded with some breaking news! Marvel/Disney has cut a deal with Sony so that Spider-Man can appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). First off I'm going to tell you why I think this happened , then I'm going to tell you the rules on this deal that we know so far , then I'm going to give you my 2 cents on the matter. Let's begin ; why I think this happened , I'm going to bring you back to December there was this little hack that made national news (of course I'm referring to the Sony Hack) which I don't feel necessary to go into detail partly because you couldn't you could not go onto a news channel during that time without hearing about it. Even after that hack was over there is still so much bad press surrounding the studio particularly on the personal e-mails that got hacked . The affects of this hack we are starting to see like what happened about a week ago with Amy Pascal resigning as the head of the movie division for Sony. They may have gotten their money back with the interview but there was so much bad press surrounding the studio that something positive had to occur in the news. Let's get on to what this deal includes , first off we do not know much about this deal in this point in time, but what we do know is that Marvel has not gotten the rights to Spider-Man back from Sony but don't get me wrong it will appear in the MCU and Sony still has full creative control over the character. Spider-Man will appear in a Marvel movie before a stand alone movie in 2017 (As to what movie he will appear in remains to be seen ). Kevin Feige will be a producer on the new Spider-Man movie along with Amy Pascal former head of Sony. That is basically all we know for now. How much creative control Kevin Feige will have remains to be seen and whether or not Andrew Garfield will reprises his role as Spider-Man in the MCU once again remains to be seen. Now for my opinion on the matter , I never dreamed that this would happen , let me put this into perspective . Now Disney one of the biggest media empires in the world working together with some may say their biggest competitor Sony ( who many think is bigger than Disney ) . These two working together is basically like McDonalds and Burger King working together to make a hamburger ( now of course this will never happen but then again Disney and Sony are working together so maybe that will eventually happen too). I think this Deal is FANTASTIC and I can't wait for Spider-Man to appear in the MCU! Probably we will know about this deal as the days progress but for now it is time for me to say Good Night and Bee Happy.

The 2015 Annie Awards

The international animated film society (ASIFA-Holywood) held the 42nd annual Annie Awards Ceremony on the eve of Superbowl Sunday, but you may not have realized this as you may have been too busy looking @ Football Scores. Now there are a couple things that I would like to address before I get into this: First off, you may be wondering “What are The Annie Awards?” Well think of it as The Oscars or The Emmys of animation. Now if you are still not really that sure about the Annies, I will put a link to where you will be able to see a Wikipedia article on them and a little short made in 2013 to celebrate the Annies 40th anniversary. Now that that is out of the way, let's move on to my thoughts of the ceremony.

In the past I have called the Annies the most disorganized Award Show because the Ceremonies in recent years have been a bit of a mess. For example, on several occasions, presenters were not prepared as to what to say and some winners waffled on for 10 minutes. Other times, the host did not know which presenters he was supposed to introduce . The worst problem was sometimes giving the wrong envelope for the wrong category for the wrong presenter (3 years in a row). Therefore, I was prepared to be reviewing a mess of a ceremony today, I even got a picture with The Annie with a big red question mark icon, but ironically enough, this turned out not to be the case. Most of the presenters knew what they were supposed to say, except at the beginning, when the teleprompter was not working at all (not their fault but, that incident earned the Annie with the big RED “?”- look for the picture down below). Most surprising of all is that they did not make the envelope fiasco 4 years in a row.

I would like to point out that The Annie Awards are not shown on TV. There are only two ways which they can be watched: on the internet or in person. I personally voted for the internet, partly because they are in Hollywood and I am in New York (not that I would not have loved to see them in person). I think that part of the reason they have not been televised in their 42 year history is for the reasons that I have already mentioned earlier. If the Annies can keep their shows as organized as this one, they may get a chance for a network to televise them (or a cable channel).

As with the SAG and The Oscars, they also have an “In Memoriam tribute” around the middle of the show. If you read my SAG award review you may remember that I said that the In Memoriam tribute was my favorite part of the show, but this was not the case at The Annies due to the fact that it was merely just names scrolling down the screen with a nice background. In my opinion, I think that this is incredibly disrespectful for the people who died. They had a much better In Memoriam tribute last year, but this one seemed more like an afterthought.

Let's move on to the winners: How To Train Your Dragon ll deserving won the majority of the awards. The first “How to Train Your Dragon” unfairly won all the awards in 2011. If you want to know more about the first “How To Train Your Dragon” winning, I will post a link where you can learn about it online (did I mention that How to train Your Dragon ll who also won best animated picture, and also best director and best music and many more?). Yet the other movies were not forgotten: The “Lego Movie” won an award for best writing and “Big Hero 6, ” “The Book of Life,” along with “The Boxtrolls” won awards.

Thanks for joining me today and visit me next time for my review of the biggest night in cinema: “The Oscars.” Good Night and bee happy .
