Hello,
and welcome back. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. You might
have noticed that my posts have been rather infrequent and that's
because my volunteer staff took the summer off. But anyways, to make
it up to all of you, the fall will be a very busy time for us. Some
of the things that I have planned are the reviews of The
Land Before Time installments 10 and 11and my
long-awaited review of The Quiet Man, a
tribute to Gene Wilder, and the start of my award season coverage.
And, speaking of award season, The Academy is very close to
announcing who their pick for Hollywood's biggest night will be.
Now,
every year I make my own private case for who I want to host the
Oscars. And, I thought I would share this list with all of you.
Now,
first off, The Hollywood Reporter unearthed several names of
candidates from the decision-makers' desks. I will tell you those
names very quickly because they are not on my list: Eddie Murphy (has
not been funny for decades), Louis C.K. (could work), Jimmy Kimmel
(who did a really good job hosting the Emmys), Key and Peele (a good
comedy duo), The Rock and Kevin Hart (The Rock is good, Kevin Hart,
not so much).
My
list are names that the Academy should be considering. I'm going to
be giving you the pros and cons of people on my list as to why the
Academy should or shouldn't consider them. After all, the reason
that the Oscars are on TV is because of ratings. In simple math
terms, ratings = $$$. Enough introductions
X
Patton Oswald.
He
is one of my personal favorite comedians.
Pro
- He hosted the Annie Awards in the first year when they had the
envelope fiasco. He was able to make jokes about it and it proved
that he had a quick wit.
Con
– He is a very obscure comedian

John Oliver
Last
Week Tonight is one of my favorite late-night shows and the best
satire on tv.
Pro
– He has a legion of fans which will transfer for the telecast.
Con
– He may offend the older crowd and some Hollywood celebrities.
And, his show airs on Sunday nights...the same night as the Oscars.

Stephen Colbert
Along
with Oliver, he is a The Daily Show
alum and one of my favorite late-show hosts.
Pro
– The Late Show is one of the highest rated talk shows.
Con
– He is on a competing network.
VII
Kevin Spacey
He
is a great actor and very funny.
Pro
– He has a great deal of credibility.
Con
– He might not appeal to the younger crowd.

Jon Stewart
Back
when he hosted The Daily Show,
I watched it religiously.
Pro
– He has a legion of fans (me included)
Con
– He's hosted the show twice and both shows ended up being the
lowest rated Oscar shows

Billy Crystal
He's
a classic comedian
Pro
– He's hosted the show nine times and the first couple shows he did
(with the exception of the 1997 show) are some of the highest rated
shows and overall did really well in the ratings.
Con-
The last time he hosted in 2012, he drew more older people. And, in
1997, he did really bad in the ratings.

Seth Myers
He
is one of my favorite late-night guys and one of the best Emmy hosts
in recent memory (sorry, Kimmel).
Pro
– His show is the highest-rated show in the time slot.
Con
– He is on a competing network.

Steve Martin
One
of the greatest comedians ever (to understate it).
Pro
– Who doesn't like Steve Martin? He has been in some of the
greatest comedies ever made and has also received an honorary Oscar.
Con
– He is a three-time host, and he hasn't brought stellar ratings
with him when he hosts. Of course, they didn't do horrible.

Whoopie Goldberg
Also
one of the greatest comedians ever. And, in my opinion, the greatest
female comedian living.
Pro
– She hosts the view, which airs on ABC and the Oscars are on ABC,
so there is an opportunity for cross-promotion
Con
– She has hosted the Oscars four times and they did not do so well
in the ratings.
And,
now, before I get to number 1, it's time for some honorable mentions.
Me! Ellen DiGeneres, Samantha Bee, and Hugh Jackman (just not as
Blackbeard).
And
the number 1 spot goes to....
I
Seth McFarlane
In
my opinion, far and away, the best Oscar host in recent
memory...maybe even ever. Of course I have not seen every Oscar
ceremony (I wish I had because that would be a pretty nice claim to
fame).
Pro
– The show he hosted did really well in the ratings.
Con
– He offended a lot of the Hollywood Elite...mainly because they
don't have a very good sense of humor. Also, his last two movies (A
Million Ways to Die in the West and Ted 2) did not do well at the box
office.
Well,
